Fire extinguishers, like all cylinders containing compressed chemicals, are considered Dangerous Goods and require specific handling. This short training video details the packaging and labeling requirements approved by DOT and IATA:

So, to summarize:

  • You need to use strong packaging that will prevent the valves from breaking during transit
  • The proper Shipping Name (Fire Extinguisher) and UN Number (UN 1044) must be written on the package or on a label placed on the box
  • The Hazard Class 2.2 label (green) must be placed on the box on the same side as the Proper Shipping Name and UN Number
  • The shipping label must include the name and address of both the shipper and consignee
