05/10/12 – Volcano in Mexico forces closure of Puebla airport
An ash cloud from a Mexican volcano forced the suspension of flights today to and from the international airport of Puebla, a major city southeast of Mexico City.
Local authorities had ordered the airport to close and would review the situation again around midday.

The Chicago G8 Summit will be taking place from May 19th through 6 pm Monday, May 21st. Chicago Transit Authority has created a list of planned reroutes and service disruptions expected during the Summit weekend.
Below are potential road closures and traffic alerts:
- Lake Shore Drive (LSD) from 39th street to Balbo will be closed
- Access to 1-55 southbound and access to LSD via 1-55 northbound will be closed

April 28th begins the "Golden Week" in Japan, Which will continue through May 6th. Please note that during these dates, most businesses, banks and customs offices are closed. Holiday clearance is possible with advance notice. Travel activity is anticipated to peak on May 3rd, with many residents leaving the large urban centers and returning on May 5th through May 6th.

An 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia on Wednesday, sending residents around the region dashing out of their homes and offices in fear.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami watch was in effect for the entire Indian Ocean and individual countries, including Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India, issued tsunami warnings.
The quake struck 308 miles (500 km) southwest of the city of Banda Aceh, on the northern tip of Indonesia's Sumatra island, at a depth of 20.5 miles (33 km), the U.S. Geological survey said. Indonesia's disaster management agency said power was down in Aceh province and people were gathering on high ground as sirens warned of the danger.
Hundreds of office workers in the Indian city of Bangalore left their buildings while the Indian port of Chennai closed down because of the danger of a tsunami, the port said.
A second Tsunami Warning was just issued after a 8.3 magnitude aftershock a short time ago.

03/28/12 – General strike in Spain on Thursday 3/29/12
Due to a nationwide general strike in Spain on March 29th 2012, local authorities asked all airlines to reduce their flight program into and out of Spain. Therefore cancellations and delays will occur that day.
A number of airlines, including Easyjet and Ryanair, are announcing flight cancellations.
British Airways however are stating that flights are operating normally at present but advise passengers to check their flights status before leaving for the airport. Any flights operating tomorrow may be subject to delays.

03/26/12 – Magnitude 7.1 Earthquake - Maule, Chile

A 7.1 magnitude
earthquake struck central Chile, prompting an short-lived evacuation order for
coastal areas and causing scenes of panic in a region devastated by a massive
quake two years ago.
There were no
immediate reports of deaths or significant damage, officials in Chile said on
Monday, a day after the tremor struck.
The Chilean navy's
hydrographic and oceanographic service and the national emergency office called
off a tsunami warning for most of the central coast after an analysis showed
the quake wasn't the type to provoke killer waves.

Air France reported that there had been some flight cancellations Monday due to the strike by air transport labor unions.

01/30/12 – Thick Fog Diverts Dozes of Flights and Creates Traffic Gridlock
Thick fog engulfed many parts of the UAE this morning, grounding flights and bringing traffic to a standstill.
According to the Abu Dhabi International Airport’s website, more than 30 flights were delayed as the fog blanketed the capital. Several flights were cancelled and at least another 30 flights due to land today were diverted to other airports.
Dubai and Sharjah airports have not experienced any weather-related delays.
Shaheen Air, which confirmed the flight disruptions, said two of its early morning departures to Pakistan were delayed and were expected to leave from Abu Dhabi this afternoon. An official from the airline said its incoming flights had been diverted to Al Ain.
Meanwhile, the thick fog created traffic gridlock in several areas of the UAE, including in Jebel Ali, on the Abu Dhabi-Al Ain highway and around the south-west part of the capital.
The National Center of Meteorology and Seismology urged motorists to drive carefully in the foggy conditions, which lasted until around 10am. "Visibility would be poor due to fog. Motorists are advised to be careful," said a weather forecaster.
The foggy conditions are likely to continue late tonight and tomorrow as the temperature continues to fall. Seas will remain rough and will become moderate by the afternoon.

01/25/12 – Flights Being Rerouted Due to a Rare Solar Storm
A rare solar flare erupted late Sunday night resulting in a solar radiation storm today, according to NASA. It's the strongest such storm since September 2005, according to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center. Several airlines have begun taking action to mitigate the affect of this storm.
Delta Airlines Inc. said Tuesday that it was rerouting some transpolar flights between Asia and the U.S. to avoid the impact of the largest solar storm in almost a decade. The Atlanta-based carrier said some flights to Detroit from Hong Kong, Shanghai and Seoul took a more southerly routing on overnight flights, though a spokesman said planes flew faster to keep schedules intact. Tuesday departures from the U.S. were expected to follow similar routes.
United Continental Holding Inc., which operates a number of transpolar flights from Chicago and Newark airports, said there had been no operational impact from the storm on Asian flights. However, a flight from Washington, D.C., to Dubai was rerouted to a more southerly course.
Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., another regular on the routes, was not immediately available for comment.
Airlines occasionally reroute transpolar flights as a precautionary measure during big solar storms, with radiation levels heightened near the poles because of the relatively thin ozone layer. The region is also more prone to the disturbance of navigation and communication systems because of the convergence of magnetic field lines at the poles.
The biggest issue is radiation, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado.
The radiation is mostly a concern for satellite disruptions and astronauts in space. It can cause communication problems for polar-traveling airplanes, said space weather center physicist Doug Biesecker.

12/27/11 – Canada braces for first big storm of the season
A potentially large amount of snow is headed for eastern Ontario and Quebec.
A series of snowfall warnings have been issued stretching from Ottawa to Montreal and continuing across most of southeastern Quebec.
Canada’s weather office is predicting anywhere from 10 to 40 centimeters, depending on the region.
Porter Airlines and Air Canada both warned that the storm may cause delays or cancellations of some flights.

Hurricane Rina is now a category 2 hurricane with 100 mph winds.
- Will slowly turn to the north and eventually
east during the next several days, possibly making landfall along the
east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula sometime Thursday
- Expected
to strengthen some more, and could be a major hurricane as it approaches
Yucatan, but might begin weakening before landfall or closest approach
to Yucatan
- Four aircraft recon missions per day, alternating
between Air Force and NOAA hurricane hunter planes, are planned for the
next few days, as long as the system is over water
- Most models
forecast Rina to significantly weaken while moving eastward toward Cuba
or southern Florida later this week or this weekend, while some forecast
it to dissipate over Yucatan; only one model currently forecasts a
hurricane to reach southern Florida, and this scenario appears unlikely
due to increasing wind shear later this week
- Those in southern
Florida should closely monitor Rina since the long-range forecast is
very uncertain and impacts there such as tropical storm conditions are
slightly possible
10/25/11 – Australia Customs Strikes set for Thursday 10/27
Australian customs officials are not showing up to work on Thursday, October 27, in a bid to score a decent pay rise. For international travelers, getting into Australia will be difficult. Trying to leave the island nation will come with problems, too. Customs and Border Protection has advised travelers wishing to leave the country to get to the airport early. From midnight on Wednesday, October 26, customs officers will walk off the job at Sydney, Melbourne and Perth international airports for 24 hours. Officers in Brisbane, Darwin and Adelaide international airports will strike for two hours, while strikes are also mooted for Cairns and Gold Coast international airports. The Customs Marine Unit will throw its weight behind the strike, and its two-hour strike on Thursday will impact cargo inspections, ports and international mail centers.

10/10/11 – Air Canada Receives Strike Notice from CUPE to begin on Oct 13th
Air Canada has been advised by CUPE, the union representing the airline’s 6,800 flight attendants, that the new tentative agreement reached by the Company and the union’s negotiating committee on September 20, 2011 was not ratified by the union membership. Subsequently, Air Canada has been given a strike notice by CUPE confirming the union’s intention to begin a strike at 00:01 a.m. ET Thursday October 13, 2011. In the interim, Air Canada’s operations are not affected and the airline will continue to operate its normal schedule.
"We are perplexed and disappointed that two tentative agreements negotiated in good faith with and unanimously recommended by the democratically elected representatives of our flight attendants have failed to be ratified," said Duncan Dee, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “Air Canada remains hopeful that a disruption can be avoided.”
In the event of a work disruption, Air Canada will implement a partial schedule. Further details of the partial schedule would be communicated prior to implementation.

10/03/11 – Typhoon Nalgae Approaching China
The National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center upgraded the rainstorm alert for Typhoon Nalgae to the orange level on Monday afternoon.
Orange is the second-highest alert level in the country's four-level rainstorm alert system.
The center warned that a number of tidal stations off Hainan, Guangdong and Fujian provinces will see tides exceeding safety levels.
Waves of 2 to 5 meters high have been observed in the waters off Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian, and Zhejiang provinces according to a statement issued by the forecasting center on Monday afternoon.
Waters off east Hainan province will see waves of 3.5 to 5 meters high from Monday night to Tuesday
The East China Sea and Taiwan Strait will see waves of 3 to 5 meters high

Please be advised that Typhoon Nesat is lashing the Hong Kong and southern China coast this morning. Hong Kong has hoisted the T8 Typhoon signal and all schools, shops, government offices and businesses are closed until further notice.
Typhoon Nesat, the strongest to hit China this year, forced the
evacuation of 300,000 people, grounded flights and closed markets as it
swept past Hong Kong, slammed into the Chinese island of Hainan and
headed to Vietnam.
Hong Kong’s No. 8 storm warning was reduced to a strong wind signal at 5 p.m. local time with Nesat 450 kilometers (280 miles) away, according to the city’s observatory .
Most public transportation in Hong Kong had resumed by the evening as the city prepared for the return of thousands of workers to the financial district that was cleared by the storm.

About 1,000 members of Communist group MAS marched to parliament chanting "Resist" and "Plutocracy should pay for this crisis" as part of the first big nationwide rallies since June when daily protests ended in bloody clashes with police.
Another 6,000 students, some carrying black flags and wearing teargas masks, and teachers joined them outside parliament, with union members expected to join them later. There was a big riot police deployment.
Striking taxi drivers and bus, metro and rail workers meant commuters had to use their own cars, triggering kilometers-long traffic jams and stranding tourists at hotels in Athens' ancient city center. Unions said more strikes were planned.
"The situation is dramatic, all major streets are jammed," said one traffic police official, who declined to be named. An air traffic controller stoppage delayed 100 flights by up to four hours and dozens more in an out of Greece were canceled.

Wind: Tropical storm conditions are expected to reach the Lesser Antilles by late today, then spread northwestward over the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Saturday and Saturday night.
Rainfall: Maria is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 4 to 8 inches with isolated maximum amounts of 10 inches over the central to northern lesser Antilles, the virgin islands, and Puerto Rico.
